The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du CanadaJuly 9, 2008
The McGeachy Senior Scholarship, to develop leaders who will provide The United Church of Canada with discernment and direction to inspire the church toward creative and faithful mission, has been awarded to Betsy Anderson for her project to write the “Story of Howland House.”
Howland House was an intergenerational community of Student Christian Movement members who were committed to Christian witness and solidarity in the workplace, particularly in factory work and other unskilled jobs. Betsy’s project will document the “Story of Howland House” and its connection to the wider “faith in daily living” movement in Canada. The background and influences that led to the creation of Howland House are national and international, and will form the backdrop of this study. Through telling the story of Howland House, Betsy will tell the story of the Student Christian Movement in Canada during this time period.
